Digital Fine Art: The Art of Photomontage

Photomontage has a long tradition, going back to the late 19th century. It was begun by Man Ray and other Surrealist photographers who altered and layered their images using darkroom techniques.

Today, most photomontages are "composited" on a computer, using Photoshop and other graphics software. The images I construct are made by layering and blending a variety of images: photographs of local landscapes and people, and scans and photos of paintings and drawings I created earlier. After compositing, the final picture generally depicts a unified pictorial space rather than a collection of parts. In effect, I make a completely new and unique image out of many disparate pieces.

Photomontage, although a photo-based art, is a technique that allows an artist to create images that don't exist in real physical space. When you see photorealistic images of water in the sky, fire in the water, shadows of shadows, or imaginary creatures overlooking very real landscapes, you are being asked to question the nature of reality and perception.
